Is Mobile Website Design A Thing Of The Past?

Imagine that it’s a decade ago. In early 2001, the Verizon Kyocera 6035 powered by the Palm OS was released to the public — the first smartphone ever to have limited web surfing capability. But that vaunted capacity quickly turned out to be…a bit less than what Verizon and Palm had hoped it would be. The Kyocera couldn’t handle pictures, it couldn’t see much of a webpage at a time, and it basically kind of sucked.

But, it’s what we had, and major companies wasted absolutely no time developing a new programming language and several protocols to deal with mobile website design. The theory was simple: KISS. Very basic websites with text, links, and little else, designed to let the mobile surfer do what they needed to without wasting a single byte of data transfer.

Since then, however, we’ve taken massive strides down the path of mobile web browsing. Today, we have 5G networks springing up across the country, mobile devices that don’t have download limits, and offer download speeds to rival most home computers’ internet connections. Furthermore, the graphical abilities of smartphones have exploded as well, with even low-end models able to download and play games hot xxx pics nipples braless pokies that make the GameBoy Advance and the PSP1 jealous.

So what purpose does mobile website design have in a world of wireless gizmos that aren’t limited to the features that mobile website design supports? Why bother creating an entirely new site that will need it’s own support and even it’s own organic SEO if you expect it to get any traffic? The answer, quite simply, is that smartphone penetration is at less than 10%.

What that means is that, of the 300 million people in America, less than 30 million have smartphones. That means that leaving mobile website design this early in the game is basically telling those other 290 million people that you don’t need their money. That’s not the kind of message you want to be saying.

Even today, I meet people who can’t even be bothered to get one of those cheap one-purpose or even pay-per-minute cellphones. These are people who will probably one day give in and purchase a webphone, but they’re not going to shell out for a smartphone in their lifetimes. Don’t give up mobile website design just yet, or you’ll be leaving all of their money on the table.

  1. This website isn’t quite open for business. It is my first website. Most of my clients are women which is why the design is deliberately feminine (ie flower backgrounds etc). Am I missing anything obvious, or any way to improve this site? I’m sure I’ll improve on it in time. Friendly opinions only will be read 🙂
    It is: http://www.askingangels.com
Does it look okay on a massive screen (if you have one) or does it do something weird?
graphics of what? graphics just for the sake of having graphics? I don’t think so. I will be adding some advertising at the top of the page next to the banner.
Thanks Tyler. I know the colours are out of whack, but then again this isn’t supposed to be professional, more of a hobby or else I would pay to get a website done. I just did this myself from scratch and it has been fun. That banner is my very first try…I’m kinda impatient and want the site open for business and then I can fix stuff. I have known people to pay $1500 for a website that has only a few pages total on it (selling 4 products only) and such a crap design, nothing to it. I do have to fix colour schemes for sure, especially on the banner and play around with backgrounds.

  2. I am wanting to start up a webstore selling products. I am very good at creating websites but have never really dabbled with search engine optimizing (SEO’ing) them, and if I were to create a store I think it would be vital to make it optimized for search engines. Also, I have never included a shopping cart on any of my websites apart from a paypal cart, which is very simple to include. I was wondering what books/software I should read to learn to SEO my website effectively and learn to advertise it on the net etc?

  3. I want to find a good company which can do SEO well.
    Keywords as below:
    shoes
    wholesale shoes
    clothes bag
requirements: in the first page on Google.com after SEO.

  4. What program/or programs do you use for designing high quality, professional looking sites? I don’t mind a learning curve.

  5. I have a company in Chittagong Bangladesh. Now i want to build a website for my company so looking for best website design company in Chittagong Bangladesh. Any one can help me?

  7. I am trying to create a website, but the problem is I dont know how, I only know a little bit of what I can remember in HTML, but thats all. Fine, so I’m going to a hire a webdesigner to do the work. I met with one, and he says he will design using “dotnetnuke” and a skin of my choice, for a price of 1200 USD. For those that who dont know, a dotnetnuke site supposedly runs on modules and what-not; the modules can be inserted like sticking coins into a vending machine. The question I ask is, should I pay someone $1200 for a website that seems so easy to put together? if yes, fine. However if not, then what is a reasonable amount to offer?

  8. When someone pays you to create a website for them, how does it all work?

What is the pricing and how is that worked out? For example, is it per page? And basic website vs complicated design?

What sort of info do you promt from the client and when do you show them progress in case they want things changed (an obvious one would be the mock ups/comps, but when else)? When is payment made? Should a contract be signed also?

What if the client wants you to make a small update in the future? How much do you charge them?

    Any other tips?

    Thank you. 🙂

    hi there!!

i want to design a nifty fun quirky flash website, but dont know html – what programme is best to use? I want to add videos, animations, a guestbook, background music, strange fonts, moving titles in short: the whole shazam….!

i looked at some website design programmes like joomla and frontpage, but their website templates (samples) seem to static, business-like and a little boring….and i’ve got such crazy funky ideas i want to put out there, so i think i need a flash designer, right? (Not sure, i dont know anything about web design – though i can make great looking stuf in photoshop etc! 🙂

Please help, ill be eternally grateful!

  10. I have no online marketing experience and do not have any product to sale. I’ve been searching books to learn online marketing and most of them are good for business owners.

  11. I am learning various programming languages (JAVA, C) in school right now but I want to learn website design languages on the side. What do you recommend I start out learning?

  12. 1. How do I RE-CREATE the same webpage inorder to make a website with multiple webpages? which program is best to use if you have minimal html designing know-how
    2. How come some FREE website templates are difficult to customize once you download it, and it is also difficult to recreate or copy the same webpage. These free website templates only give out index.html but once you try to copy the same to make other webpages like contact, profile, portfolio it is difficult and the page seem hard to edit or customize.

  13. I recently registered a domain name and kind of jumped the gun because I know very little about web design. However, I have all of the high-end web design programs as well as the appropriate IDE’s. I’m trying to teach myself all of the proper ways of developing a website, however, with so much information, I have no idea where to start. So my question is: where the hell do I start? I need to learn Flash, PHP, HTML, Javascript, CSS, and how to operate cPanel (I host as hostgator.com, and that is the thing they give users to organize their websites). Which order would you recommend learning them, which programs are best in your opinion for development for each (or programs best suited for overall website design), and which tutorials or self-help books or websites would you reccommend? Please keep in mind I’m running on a strict budget and I’d be considered a beginner skill level. My major is computer science, and I learn very fast, but I don’t want a program off the bat that requires you to be Advanced. Thanks for any help. 🙂
Also, I here SQL servers and FTP servers (or whatever they are) are essential to creating a website. Tips on that would be awesome too.

  14. can you give me at least two websites that talks about design? it can be any type of design.

  15. and if you are service provider how much you charge for seo? plz tell me a estimated cost..
    thnx

  16. (Please just peoples with website design know lodge to answer)I am in planning to design a website and I wonder what is the best language or software for design of a website with high traffic and a few item for sell and data need to be stored for each customer and an online payment.

  17. I’m looking to design a website where users need to register to post comments and to reply to them. Also want to integrate a fee system in this. The system should have capacity for several thousands of users. Have some experience of website design, but this ones way beyond my capabilities. Does anyone have any advice/comments about designing a website like this??? Where do I start? Thx.
Just to clarfiy, users of the website will be able to register an account and so I guess I’ll need some sort of database and method of data storage and control

  18. I’m looking to have a website developed, but i have a few questions i need to know before i seek web designers:

    1) About how much would i be spending? I want to have a basic idea, so i don’t underpay or overpay. My site would be pretty basic, 5-10 pages, a gallery, little flash, just clean and simple.

    2) Would i be able to maintain it myself? I have no skills, but i would be interested in adding more photographs and information – and would like to avoid the extra cost / hassle of having people maintain it for me. How would they transfer it to me? Would i have to pay extra for such a request?

    3) How much communication is involved in the process of webdesign? I have many ideas of my own about the design and layout (but i’m still wanting their own ideas and creativity) – is there communication through instant messaging / email, that allows me to give them input?
I really can’t do it myself. I looked at templates, and none of them really suited me (and i figured for only a little more i could have something fully to my liking).

Also, i’d like it up pretty soon, and it would take me far too long to learn how to do it. Also, i have the money to spend, and really would like top-notch quality and, even if i learned, i could probably never do what a trained person could do.

I’m a photographer, and the website would showcase my work and offer basic information. I really am into styles like these:

    http://www.craigstevens.net/
    http://annemcaulay.com/
    http://www.brand-photography.com/
    http://www.zija.net/
    http://www.chrisciborowski.com/contact.html

  19. I’m doing some market research for website design and just wanted to get an idea of what other people or companies in the industry charge for web design services. Please, no speculation. If you do sites, what do you charge? If you had a site done, what did you pay? Or link to sources that have prices for web design services.

    Thank you.

  21. Someone was talking about designing a website and they said that they were using something that was
SEO friendly. Just wondering what that meant.

  22. Hi, can anyone think of any ideas for my website design because i think my current one is too basic (BUT its not anywhere finished so i guess it would be). I will make it (you can make a prototype if you really want) but i just need some ideas.

  27. I am trying to make a career choice and I think this is what I would like to do and stick with. If you are a website designer can you please tell me what you do, day to day operations, how much I can expect to make, and any other info you think I will need to know. Also, I am really interested in working for myself. Thank-you 🙂

  28. In high school I was told to NOT make much noise on the internet. But these days the direct opposite is being said and done through facebook, twitter, linkedin… etc. People say that these are our resources these days but I’m not seeing Twitter or facebook really bringing up any real local jobs… and Linked in has a total of 5 jobs in my local area posted for ANY random job.

I was also taught to go in to each business I’d like to work with one by one and ask if they’re hiring. I tend to get a lot of “I don’t know’s” from managers and all the applications are done online. And it tends to just be a waste of gas money when I’m out of a job.

So I’m left at a loss at what businesses are actually hiring in the first place. I suppose I could just pop onto Google Maps and drive around all the nearby towns in street view and look at all the businesses and think “Hmmm… maybe they’re hiring” and pop onto their website and see what my chances are. But that seems counter productive too.

Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, and pretty much any other job board is completely littered with nothing but one scam after another. And what legit jobs that are posted there… it seems like they’re all jobs that demand far more experience or college than I have — and even if I went to college, I’m not sure if that’d really help. It doesn’t seem to help anyone I’ve ever seen. And the most that I’ve ever gotten from places like Monster.com is the military and colleges calling me up because you’re forced to fill out military adds and college surveys in order to JUST fill out an application. Either way, you walk away from these job boards getting spammed or scammed.

What is the real genuinely effective way of getting a job these days? To know WHO is hiring and WHAT jobs you qualify for and where you should and should not apply?

  29. I’d like to know which one I should learn (on my own).

    1. What’s the difference between the two?
    2. Which one would be better for an entrepreneur?
    3. I want to build a website similar to craigslist and kijiji, which one should I learn?
    4. Where do I start?

  30. Hi,

I would really appreciate it if you could let me know what you think of my new website design. Me and my wife have spent a lot of time and money trying to make it look professional. The website is to sell mobile phones.

Here is a link: (Temporary Domain): http://tvpreview.co.uk/index.php/

If it is possible, please could you let me know what you think of the design of the homepage.
    – Rate it out of 10 (1 poor to 10 Fab)
    – Postives
    – Negatives
    – Improvements

Main question: What niche age do you think it would appeal to?.

Thank you so much for your time,
    Joe.

  31. i am looking for cheap search engine optimization services…please only recommend me to use one that you have personal experience with. thanks

  32. Can someone recommend me a company providing affordable website development and SEO services. Charlotte web development company will be plus for me.
    Thanks in advance!
The web design firm must have full time PHP programmers and have experience with ecommerce and shopping cart websites.

  33. I am currently looking for an SEO developer for my website. I recently just hired one based in India (which I found through elance.com), about 8 months ago. He was able to do onpage optimization and create 150 inbound links to my site, along with other SEO works such as article submission, directory submission.

The problem is that the 150 inbound links were mostly PR0, PR1, and sometimes PR2. They were somewhat irrelevant to my niche market.

I started with about a top 10-12 position with my main keyword, and now I am in the top 8-9 position. Not really that impressive in my opinion.

Anyways, Ive been doing research online for SEO developers, and I stumbled upon this site called www(dot)internet(dash)empire(dot)com.

I emailed them for a quotation and the person I am speaking with is very professional and great to speak with. It is a company based in Singapore. You can check their website.

The guarantee he has is that he will guarantee me at the top 3 positions for 5 of my main keywords (I choose the big main keywords I have), or my money-back, full refund. This will be done in 6 months or less, and I will pay him the remaining 50% as the 5 keywords reach the top 3 position.

    The price is $2,500 USD.

I wanted to ask the opinions here at Warrior Forum before I move forward with this. I believe that $2,500 is a little heavy on my end, but if it would mean getting the top 3 positions on Google.com for my top 5 keywords, this would be a wonderful deal.

Thanks in advance for your inputs!

  34. I need a website that can either, 1) get my tattoo designs i requested in less then an hour. 2) i need a site that has a list of FULL designs on paper that are large. I can also use some ideas. I want the tattoo on my wrist/forarm maybe a band around my wrist/forarm (It would have to be on a full piece of paper) or somethign relegious

Iv been to sites but they charge you to get the image. You can only see an image 10×10 and it has the logo over it.

I need it on a large piece of paper so the artist can see the whole thing clearly without the logo accross it from whomever made it
In option one, i was wondering if there was a site that i can just scroll to the things im looking for like kinda browse. And it recommends tattoos for me. Mmm i need an actual picture. Not just a picture of a tattoo on skin

  35. are there any websites or software where i can just design a shirt and then use the pictures to build up a portfolio before i decide to try and sell them ?

  36. Over the years, I took SEO services from various companies promising top 5 positions on all major crawlers. This, of course, was never achieved by ANY of them. The issue, from my understanding of backlink creation, is that although the SEO company may submit our URL to high PR sites to create backlinks, it is never garanteed that the websites will actually accept to post the backlink.

Recently, I’ve looked into Linkproz. They are “brokers” for a series of websites. They are asking 500$/month to create 15 backlinks on PR 4 sites and 5 backlinks on PR 3 sites. These links however need to be paid on a monthly basis. Meaning that once I terminate the service, the backlinks will disappear .

I was wondering if this is worthwhile and if, say 8 months from now, I terminate the contact, my page ranking will drop on google ?

If this is not a good method of increasing page ranking on google, does anyone have a reference for a good SEO company / person.

    Thank you,

  37. I am not a website developer by profession so dont know any language regarding website development. Can u please tell me which is the most easiest website designing software??

  38. I am wanting a website designed very basic a about us,contact us,and a gallery, homepage no shopping cart what is a fair price for this

  39. Greetings.
Does anyone know of a company or organization that provides training for website design and development.

For my T.I.E.S club at school where wanting to throw an event where students can come and learn about website design, development from an orientation.
What I’m really looking for from the “providers” is a complete step-thru of the process. Everything from the types of design software like Dream Weaver, uploading the design files, hosting/finding host, methods to do e-commerce from the website.
Essentially the whole shabang for web site deployment for the absolute newbie.

    Thanks for any suggestions/answer
